Old Field Management

What does a properly managed old field look like?

Old field areas, or any other fallow areas on a property, can hold the keys to some of the best habitat on your entire property that is just waiting patiently to be managed for wildlife.  Most old field areas are not properly managed and therefore never reach the full potential they likely have.  The native seed bed within an old field environment likely holds years' worth of seeds that are just waiting to be released.  A sea of cool season grass is not good habitat.  A well-managed old field with have a diverse mix of herbaceous plants and woody species creating a habitat mecca!
